Mong-Hsuan lives and works in Taipei. Invited by Jan-Pieter Karper, she’s the 8th artist participating in this chain.
Across rituals of Taiwanese religions, flags of order are embroidered and widely used in representation of different spiritual bodies, gods and goddesses. As a symbol of goddesses and female power, a phoenix with many tails evolves from ancient times, back to when the phoenix was a combination of legendary birds (one feminine and one masculine). The embroidered phoenix on Mong-Hsuan Tsai’s flag has the colours of the Formosan blue magpie. It's the sacred bird of the Taiwanese aborigines, and also one of those the artist admires daily from her window. "All phoenixes fly together," is its message as it leads the way, encouraging minorities to join and aim for the sky, and ensures no one gets left behind.
